Paul Walker dead: Fast and Furious actor killed in California car crash

Actor Paul Walker, who shot to fame as star of the high-octane street racing franchise "Fast & Furious," died Saturday in a car crash in Southern California. He was 40.
Walker's publicist Ame van Iden confirmed his death, but said she could not elaborate beyond statements posted on Walker's official Twitter and Facebook accounts.
Walker was a passenger in a friend's 2005 Porsche Carrera GT and both were attending a charity event for his organization, Reach Out Worldwide, in the community of Valencia in Santa Clarita, about 30 miles north of Hollywood.
The website for the charity said the Saturday event was intended to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
Speed was a factor in the crash, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said.
The wreck took place about 3:30 p.m. (6:30 p.m. ET), about 300 yards from the office park where the event was held. The speed limit there is 45 mph.

Taj Mahal World Heritage Monument
In 1631, Shah Jahan, emperor during the Mughal empire's period of greatest prosperity, was grief-stricken when his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, died during the birth of their 14th child, Gauhara Begum. Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632. The court chronicles of Shah Jahan's grief illustrate the love story traditionally held as an inspiration for Taj Mahal. The principal mausoleum was completed in 1648 and the surrounding buildings and garden were finished five years later. Emperor Shah Jahan himself described the Taj in these words:

Sometimes you have to do what’s best for you and your life, not what’s best for everyone else.

The Science of Six Packs

If you've always yearned for a washboard stomach, and you can do a thousand crunches but you still aren't seeing results, you're not alone. But never fear! Everyone has a six pack under there (somewhere), you've just got to know what to do to get it out in the open.

The Bummer

Let's get this out of the way. There's a saying in the fitness community that "six packs are made in the kitchen, not the gym." That's an oversimplification, but it's mostly true. The fact is that we all have abdominal muscles, it's just that most of us can't see them under that lil' bit of extra padding. If you really want to expose those deep cuts that separate the muscles, you've got to burn off the fat.
You might think that 1,000 crunches a day is the key to burning that fat off. It's not. While they won't hurt, 1,000 crunches isn't generally the best cardio. In order to burn fat you need to create a caloric deficit. In other words, you need to use more calories than you consume so that your body is forced to burn the excess calories you have stored as fat. You know. Eat right and exercise.

Size Matters

While diet is arguably the most important factor, there is one other thing you can do (that's right, just one): you can make your abs bigger. Looks aside, there are actually a lot of functional benefits to bulking up your abdominals. As with any other muscle group, size equals power. Having a more powerful core will help you align your posture, it will reduce fatigue in repetitious physical tasks, and it can go a long way in reducing injuries, especially to your back. Plus, you'll be able to lift more, which may come in handy in emergencies, or life in general.
Larger, more powerful muscles also tend to atrophy slower. In other words, you retain the benefits longer, generally speaking. And muscles burn calories, so the more muscle you have the more efficient you are at burning fat and/or keeping it off. If you're worried about more abs making you look too bulky, don't. The fact is, it's not easy to grow muscle, and it's really, really hard to over-grow it. Those scary-looking bodybuilders don't get like that by accident, and neither will you.
Okay, so we want to add some lean muscle mass to our abs. But how?

High Reps vs High Weight

At a certain point, working your abs leads to diminishing returns. One of the best pieces of advice I've ever heard on the subject came from a trainer at a gym I joined a decade ago. To paraphrase:
If you wanted to get bigger biceps, you wouldn't lift a one pound weight 500 times, would you? No, it would take forever and it might make the muscle stronger and firmer, but it wouldn't make it bigger (editor's note: remember you can't see firmness through the padding, only size). Abs are just like any other muscle: if you want to increase size and power, add weight.
Somehow, it had never occurred to me to treat my abs like my other muscles. People will tell you that you can work your abs every day. But just because you can, doesn't mean you should. If you're trying to grow muscle, you need to give the little microscopic tears you cause in your muscle fibers with every work out time to heal, rebuild, and grow.
Starting slowly, so you know your limits and don't injure yourself, try moving over to a routine where instead of, say, three sets of one hundred crunches, you're adding weight to a sit-up, leg lift, or other abdominal exercise to the point where you can only do a set of eight to twelve reps. Then do three sets of those. This applies to your lower abs and your obliques (your side muscles, used for twisting) as well.
I recommend doing an exercise that focuses on your upper and middle abs, then an exercise that focuses on your obliques, then an exercise that focuses on your lower abs (in whatever order you choose). That will basically cover your whole six-pack zone. Bonus tip: with most ab exercises, adding a bit of a twist will help engage your obliques and transverse abdominal muscles, but again, be careful when you're starting out and adding weight.
This is not to say that high-rep exercises have no value. Quite the opposite, in fact. All of this is the subject of much debate in the fitness community, but it's generally agreed that high-rep/low-weight exercises are great for building endurance and stamina (jogging is a pretty good example). Those exercises will make your abs stronger and harder, and if you do a freaking ton of them (to the point of failure, just about) they can increase muscle size as well. In other words, it has tangible benefits, but it's not the most efficient way to reveal the washboard.
Ultimately, it's generally best to build a routine that favors higher-weight/fewer reps, working bit of low-weight/high-reps in there every now and then (though you may find your own special formula). That will get your six pack poking through and will increase strength and longevity. In other words, the best of both worlds.
Oh, and diet. Always diet. Sigh.

Bat-toad? Photo shows amphibian with a mouthful of mammal

Is it a new species? A mutant? A Photoshopped chimera? Nope; the subject of the picture above is weirder than that. Taken by a park ranger deep in a Peruvian rainforest, the shot shows a cane toad attempting to swallow a bat — whole.
Yufani Olaya told the Rainforest Expeditions blog that he witnessed the entire drama play out while on duty in Cerros de Amotape national park.
According to Olaya, this cane toad (Bufo marinus) was simply sitting on the ground with its mouth open, likely hoping to find an unwary insect to gobble, when the bat entered its vicinity — perhaps thinking the same thing.
Either mistakenly or with deadly intent, the toad reportedly lunged out and clamped its ample jaws down on the hapless mammal, or as much of it as it could cram in. The wings and tail, sticking out, lent a comic cast to the scene as Olaya snapped the picture.
"Toads are voracious and will eat pretty much anything that moves and can fit in their mouth," Adam Leaché, assistant professor of herpetology at the University of Washington, wrote in an email to NBC News. But, he added, "I've never seen something like this before."
This would be curtains for a beetle or millipede, but either the taste or the size of the bat seemed to disagree with the toad — and after a moment which likely proved uncomfortable for both the devourer and devouree, the toad spat out its would-be dinner.
"Cane toads don't have teeth, so the strategy is crush and swallow," wrote Charles Linkem, postdoctoral fellow at UW's biology department and a colleague of Leaché's, in an email to NBC News. "The bat was a little big for that. The toad may have tried to reposition its mouth to swallow and that was when the bat was able to escape."
Olaya thought the bat was finished for sure, but amazingly, the creature shook it off and flew away shortly thereafter.
Cane toads are not very picky eaters, which has allowed them to invade many habitats. While none have been observed eating a bat before, neither Leaché nor Linkem saw any reason why it should not be possible.
"It could be this population of toads have developed a strategy for feeding on low flying bats and that this is more common, but never observed before now," Linkem speculated. "It's hard to know without more information."
Leaché did caution, however, that there's also no hard evidence that the toad caught the bat in flight, as opposed to ambushing it on the ground, or getting at it by some other means. And the claws and bones of the bat might make digestion and excretion an issue for the toad.
Whatever the case, it makes for a great photo — even if it looks like neither the toad nor the bat was enjoying itself.

Woman's Time-Lapse Weight Loss Video Goes Viral

A 26-year-old woman's 88-pound weight loss has gone viral after a Reddit user created a time-lapse GIF that shows the woman's body transformation in just five seconds.
Amanda, who asked that her last name not be used, began taking photos of herself in 2011 as a way to stay on track when she committed to losing weight.
"I knew that I had to start somewhere," Amanda told ABC News. "I figured if I did it [took pictures] at least once a month, at the end of however long it took, I would have this really cool end product."
Amanda started weighing 222 pounds. By eating a high-protein diet, controlling her portions and doing moderate exercise, Amanda lost the 88 pounds in one year and has kept it off.
"I don't think I was actually prepared for the amount of emotional investment," Amanda said. "People bare their souls when they want to take back their health."
Her gallery of weight-loss photos garnered nearly three million views online and inspired a fellow Reddit user to create the GIF that has everyone buzzing.
"The waist got smaller. The bustline got bigger. The neckline got smaller," Dr. Jen Ashton, ABC News' senior medical contributor, said of Amanda's physical changes.
"But the more significant changes actually occur inside our bodies," she said. "Changes to one's sense of self, to one's physiology [and] to one's internal metabolism."
Last year it was another woman, Julia Kozerski, who made headlines by photographing her dramatic weight loss.
Kozerski, a photographer in Milwaukee, documented each step of her weight-loss journey inside fitting rooms, starting with herself in her wedding gown.
She turned her photographs, taken using a smartphone, into an art project called " Changing Room," where she explored her changing identity as she lost 160 pounds in one year.
"It's unbelievable for me to think about where I am right now and then think about who I was at that time," Kozerski told ABC News last September.

Serena Outslugs Sloane In New York

NEW YORK, NY, USA - When the draw was made last week it was the match-up everyone was waiting for, and when it became a reality one of them - Serena Williams - took it to a whole new level, beating Sloane Stephens in straight sets on Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach the US Open quarterfinals.
The early goings were tight - the No.1-seeded Williams drew first blood, breaking for 4-2, but the No.15-seeded Stephens broke right back, and things stayed on serve for a few more games after that. But Stephens was in trouble again serving at 4-5, fending off Williams' first two set points but firing a forehand down the line just wide on her third set point. The first set went to a fired up Williams, 6-4.
The two held serve in the first three games of the second set but that's when Williams pounced again, breaking for 3-1 and never really looking back, eventually closing her countrywoman out, 64 61.
"Going into the match I definitely wanted to be focused the whole time," Williams said. "That's all I wanted to do. Whether I was going to win or lose, I just wanted to play my game and do well today.
"It was definitely a high quality match out there. We both came out today to play. At the end of the day it was a fourth round match, but it definitely had feelings of a quarterfinal or a semifinal match."
"When you get broken at 2-1 to go down 3-1 and the other player is serving to go up 4-1, they're going to be pretty relaxed," Stephens said. "She had some bomb first serves. Having Serena serve at 3-1 up in the second set is not ideal. When she gets that opportunity, she definitely makes her move."
The match numbers went heavily in Williams' favor - she had 22 winners to just 13 unforced errors, and she was almost perfect in the second set, firing 10 winners to a measly two unforced errors.
Stephens, meanwhile, had 15 winners to 29 unforced errors in the one-hour, 28-minute contest.
"There were times I played some really good tennis, though the second set got away from me a little bit," Stephens said. "But overall I thought I played well. She's No.1 in the world for a reason.
"It didn't go how I wanted, but I competed well and played well, and that's all you can do."
Williams was asked in her post-match press conference what it would take for Stephens to get to the next level. "I don't think she has to work on anything," she said, "I think she's at the next level."

37-year-old mother becomes world's best female bodybuilder after taking up the sport just three years ago to boost her confidence

A mother-of-two has become the world’s best female bodybuilder after only starting training three years ago.
Lesley Blanchard, 37, from Seaham, County Durham, is a relative newcomer to the sport but has lifted a string of titles and now has been crowned ‘Miss World’ at the International Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship where she flexed her newly honed muscles to beat 40 other contenders at the competition staged in Rome.
Lesley was also awarded first place in the ‘Ms Shape’ challenge out of 11 competitors in the over-35s category.

Lesley Blanchard only took up body building just over three years ago but has gone from strength to strength since and earned herself the title of best female bodybuilder
Lesley was supported at the competition by fiance Bruce McCall, 46, the owner of the gym in Seaham where she trains.

She took up the sport three and a half years ago to boost her self confidence after her marriage ended.
At a chance meeting with old friend Bruce, he encouraged her to join the gym to take her mind off her problems, and their relationship blossomed into a romance two months later.
After winning the title, Lesley has qualified to enter the Miss Universe bodybuilding championship, which will be held next June.

Lesley, who is mum to daughters Hope, 16, and Abbeyjo, 13, and will be a stepmother to Bruce’s sons Jake, 13, and Clay, 20 said: 'It was just one big whirlwind. I couldn’t take it all in.

Lesley has now been crowned Miss World at the International Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships in Rome
'It was only when I spoke to my daughter on the phone that tears came into my eyes.
'It was just really overwhelming.
'I thought I was going to exceed my luggage allowance on the way back with the trophies.
'I took up body building because I thought that if I looked strong on the outside I’d feel strong inside.'
The wins follow months of training and following a strict diet of salad, fish, turkey, rice and nuts.

The win comes after months of physical training and a very strict health kick
Lesley added: 'My family were just buzzing, and the girls made me a cake and a card for when I got back.
'The competition was total different there to how it was back home.
'Here it can be quite bitchy, over there, people were asking for photos and wanting to know about you and that was really nice and friendly.'
Bruce said: 'I’m so proud of her, especially as she’s only been doing this for three-and-a-half-years. She just walked it.'
Lesley who works in the gym alongside Bruce as a personal trainer, also recently won titles at the Central of Britain and Yorkshire Classics Miss Figure contests.
She added: 'I’m just going to keep on going and enter into others after putting so much into it, and while I’m in a good condition and feel good.'

Lesley got into the sport by chance as a way to distract herself from her first marriage breakdown

Russian Powerlifter Has the Face of a Porcelain Doll and the Body of an Amazon

Yulia Viktorovna Vins, or Julia Vins, as she is known in the online bodybuilding and powerlifting communities, is a 17-year old Russian powerlifter who recently shot to Internet fame after a series of photos showing her doll-like face and impressive physique went viral.

Russia and countries of the former USSR have their share of doll-faced beauties – with Valeria Lukyanova,Anastasia Shpagina and Anzhelika Kenova being the most famous – but none of them have the impressive body of Yulia Vins. The young athlete from Engels, Russia, might have the face of a fragile porcelain doll, but her massive arm and leg muscles are enough to put most men to shame. In a recent interview with a fellow bodybuilding enthusiast, Yulia said she started working out to become stronger and build self-confidence, but had no intention of becoming a professional powerlifter. During the first year, she trained her muscles without following a clear workout program, but eventually decided she needed guidance. She was training at the school gym and the only coach there specialized in powerlifting and weightlifting. Yulia opted for the former, because she wanted her body to develop harmoniously, and in just one year she made extraordinary progress. She is currently preparing for her first official powerlifting competition, in September.

Although she has her share of admirers, Julia Vins admits there are those who criticize her choice and tell her she is ruining her body. Lately she has been trying to ignore such comments. She feels it’s her life, her body and she hates it when others try to impose their opinions on her. “There will always be people who respect my choice, or simply adequately explain why they don’t agree with it, but there is nothing to be gained by trying to defame someone who is following their dream,” the young athlete says. Her friends have always been very supportive, and some have even followed her example and joined her at the gym.
